PHDCCI launches Centre of Excellence in Green Hydrogen, recognises trailblazing Indian enterprises and individuals

PHDCCI, a distinguished chamber of commerce with a rich history of promoting sustainable economic growth, has inaugurated its Centre of Excellence in Green Hydrogen (CoE-GH) at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi. This is a significant milestone in PHDCCI’s tireless pursuit of advancing clean and green energy technologies. The CoE-GH is poised to be a hub of innovation and research in the field of green hydrogen, which has emerged as a promising alternative to fossil fuels.

The main highlight of the event was the felicitation of Indian enterprises and individuals across sectors for their exemplary contribution toward Green Energy Ecosystem .The recipient of the awards were Dr. J P Gupta, Managing Director, Greenstat India , Dr. N Kalaiselvi, Director General, CSIR , Dr. Prashant Gargava, Member Secretary, Central Pollution Control Board , Dr. J S Sharma, President, Indian Association for Air Pollution Control and Network18’s Green Ribbon Champions Initiative, the award for Networok18 was recieved by Mr Anand Narsimhan, Managing Director, Special Projects, Network18.

Dr. V K Saraswat, a distinguished Member of the esteemed NITI Aayog, has proposed that India should initiate a mission to establish a Hydrogen Economy. This mission should be designed to align with the rapid advancements in hydrogen technology being witnessed globally. The esteemed member has further highlighted that based on the evolutionary trajectory of this technology, it is expected that the demand for Blue Hydrogen and Green Hydrogen will persist even in 2050. In this regard, it is projected that a significant proportion of global hydrogen consumption (47% Blue Hydrogen and 53% Green Hydrogen) will be fulfilled by these two variants of the fuel.

Informing about the global scenario, Mr. Saraswat said, countries like France are aggressively looking for Green Hydrogen because in France base electricity load is from Nuclear (70%) In India, where the base electricity load is from Coal (80%), India should look Blue Hydrogen as an Enabler of Green Hydrogen. While concluding his remarks, he said, we should amend the definition of the Hydrogen Valley platform in an indigenous way.

Speaking on challenges related to hydrogen production, Mr. Alok Sharma, Executive Director, Centre for High Technology mentioned the importance of industry-academia partnership in India’s green Hydrogen sector mentioned, Production under 1$/kg; Development&Scale up of SOEC; High-pressure Electrolysis; Electrolysis of saline water; Membrane Development; Membraneless Electrolyser; Syn gas Production as to be the few challenges posing to it.

Mr. Sharma further mentioned there are challenges associated with hydrogen’s storage and distribution, such as Transportation using CNG pipeline Infrastructure; High-pressure cylinder for storage-Type-384; Materials for hydrogen storage Hydrides and MOFS; High pressure Tube Trallers; HRS: Chicken and Egg etc.

Mr Saket Dalmia, President,PHDCCI mentioned that the PHDCCI Centre of Excellence in Green Hydrogen will be instrumental in creating the requisite critical mass for the holistic development of Hydrogen economy in the country focusing largely on Hydrogen production technologies, storage systems, transport and applications, and Hydrogen Safety. The vision of the Centre is to develop a green Hydrogen ecosystem in India and develop trained manpower to work in Hydrogen through awareness, training, and skill development workshops.

Dr Ranjeet Mehta, Deputy Secretary General, PHDCCI, in his introductory remarks welcomed the all the eminent dignitaries and delegates for joining in this inportant session. He highlighted the opportunities for MSMEs in New Hydrogen Policy and encouraged the MSMEs to participate in the energy transition to Green Hydrogen. He said that addressing climate change will require a radical shift in our energy systems and economy. This shift represents a tremendous opportunity for innovation, job creation, and economic growth. It also presents an opportunity to move towards a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future for all.
